THI Biography/History

Tom Luke, Executive Director/Founder and Director of Integrative Health at the Therapeutic Healing Institute (THI) has been in the field of health and wellness for over 20 years. Tom founded THI in 2003. He is a licensed certified Massage Therapist, an ABMP Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals member, and a licensed Aesthetician with focus on clinical and therapeutic healing skincare services.

Tom trained at the Horst Institute of Minneapolis, MN, and the South Dakota School of Massage in Sioux Falls, SD. Twelve of those years he commuted between Sioux Falls and Minneapolis for his clientele. Having a connection to the larger city kept Tom in tune with the latest techniques that his clients were seeking. Tom has been offering chemical peels and microdermabrasion services long before they became main stream. Tom is currently studying Nutrition and Cancer, Nutrition and Cardiovascular Health, and Ayurveda with the Program of Integrative Medicine (PIM) at the University of Arizona.

Tom is personally challenged by significant loss of vision being diagnosed in 1991 with retinitis pigmentosa, restricting his vision to less than 10 degrees, which is legally blind. As a patient, he encountered the difficulty and helplessness of a chronic disease. Conventional medical science was of no help to him. Eventually he sought out therapies and philosophies that responded to him as a whole person. This experience led him to the field of integrative healing therapies. Discouragement turned to optimism and activism as he searched for therapies that empowered individuals. That is when the Therapeutic Healing Institute (THI) was born.

In 2005, Tom incorporated integrative therapy in his private practice helping clients dealing with anxiety, stress, and depression. In 2006, Tom started assisting other like minded individuals with programs that helped and enhanced their practices with the focus of integrative health and empowerment. In 2007, Tom formalized a more fully developed program for consultant work and started Integrative Healing Health Consultants (IHHC).

Tom is currently writing 2 books. One addresses integrative health therapies in the work place. He was approached by a businessman from Atlanta, Georgia with the idea of writing a book emphasizing the need for stress and relaxation therapy with an integrative health focus. The second book, focuses on integrative health therapies for patients, family, and friends.

Becky Johnson, the facilitator of cancer support groups, has seventeen years of experience as a Licensed Professional Counselor. She has a M.S. degree, and has facilitated several other groups, one of which was for women dealing with breast cancer. Becky has a practice at Knapp Counseling in Sioux Falls, S.D., and deals with depression, grief, marriage counseling, anxiety, divorce, step-parenting, as well as self-esteem and family of origin issues.

“It is my experience that groups are not only healing, but they provide a powerful catalyst to change behaviors and outlooks which may be self-defeating. I strive to make each group a place where any feeling is safe to express, and in fact, I believe that when people honestly express their feeling, that is when the healing can begin. It is my approach in groups to not only come from a place of compassion, but to also have some fun!”
